Follow Your Bliss

It's a Fact - Loving your Life comes from Discovering and Following your Passions

In 1988, I watched a truly amazing television series on PBS called Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. I was in University studying Comparative Religions and Psychology (with a little Film Studies thrown in). Listening to Campbell, who studied, wrote and taught mythology, exhilarated me. And this is where I heard his remarkable summary of all he had learned which was to "Follow Your Bliss."

Like a shot of electricity through me, his statement lit me up. "Follow Your Bliss." Why did that energize me so? At first, it might seem rather superficial and selfish to follow your bliss. Maybe even irresponsible. After all, in my early life as a singer/songwriter, following my bliss had gotten me into a lot of trouble. More about that some other time.

Yet I know what he said was true and brilliant in its simplicity. As a scholar of myths, Campbell had looked into the psychological aspects of religion. All religions have mythological origins. I was studying that too at that time. What he uncovered is that the experience of Bliss is really a description of how a person feels when she is really living or reaching for her enormous potential. It is how a person feels when he or she is connected to their source, the energy of this universe and with which we are all connected.

Bliss is a charge. It is an energy. It is your passion. It is where you feel totally alive. It is where you feel you could spend hours talking about it, doing it, and loving it. It is where you feel at home in your skin. It is when you feel like a light within has been turned on. You are jazzed.Oh yeah! Love that. It is how you yourself spread your light into the world and light it up. It is where your greatness and the world meet. So, how do you follow your bliss? It all starts with discovering your passions.

1. What have you dreamed of doing since childhood?
2. What are your natural talents?
3. What were your favorite things to do before life got too busy?
4. What would you regret not doing, being or having in this life?

This is the start of The Passion Test. A simple, yet profound exercise that will help you discover your passions. And Mothers on Fire is giving you the opportunity to come together with a group of like-minded women to go through The Passion Test with Jo-ann Ferreira, Certified Passion Test Facilitator in Oakville, Ontario on May 14th.
