Organizing Your Life

I just googled One Million Ways Mothers Get Down on Themselves. I thought for sure there would be a book about it. I see it all the time in my coaching practice. And the main ways mothers put themselves down are their judgments about the mess around the house and the chaos of running a household.

"I just need to get more organized", is the mantra I hear over and over again.

This is such a painful and difficult topic for so many women, that Flylady.com has over a half a million followers for her excellent clutter-clearing site. She has cleverly turned her name into an acronym for Finally Loving Yourself, because she understands that keeping one's life in order is often the result of feeling good about yourself.

I want to say that again - keeping one's life in order is often the result of feeling good about yourself. Many moms I coach get that backwards. Instead, they say I'll feel good about myself when I get my house in order.

An orderly family life spins off from the topic of Self-Care. But it's not exactly what you think. It isn't about being so perfect that everything runs like a precision made Swiss watch. Rather, it's about letting go of perfection entirely and not judging one's worth on any level by the clutter in the basement closet, the mess in the back of the van or doing a fast food run on the way to yet another hockey tournament, basketball game or tutoring class.

Here are some tips for finally loving yourself from the Flylady herself:

1. Start from where you are. You are never behind.
2. It all starts with Baby Steps.
3. It's all about routines.
4. Perfectionism is the enemy.
